Fusion Power Steering Failures Prompt 2nd NHTSA Investigation

For the second time, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ("NHTSA") Office of Defect Investigations ("ODI") has opened an investigation into sudden power steering failures in 2010 Ford Fusion vehicles. According to documents published by the NHTSA, the ODI had received over 500 complaints from owners of the 2010 Ford Fusion of ongoing problems with the 2010 Ford Fusion power steering. Such problems included sudden loss of the power steering assist resulting in increased difficulty steering the vehicle and/or the activation of the "power steering assist fault" warning light. The loss of this power steering can unexpectedly and significantly increase the effort needed to steer the vehicle, thereby increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.

Notable is the fact that the NHTSA had previously opened an investigation concerning this power steering failure in 2010-2012 Ford Fusion vehicles, as well as the 2010-2012 Lincoln MKZ and 2010-2011 Mercury Milan. In response to that investigation, Ford Motor Company agreed to issue Safety Recall 15S18 to reprogram the Power Steering Control Module or replace the power steering gear. However, Ford did not include the 2010 Ford Fusions within the scope of the safety recall.
