Coolant Leaks in Mazda's SKYACTIV-G 2.5T Engines May Be Leaving Residual Damage

A number of Mazda vehicles equipped with its SKYACTIV-G 2.5T engines may eventually need an entire engine replacement, despite having had the cylinder heads previously replaced. Specifically, this issue impacts the following vehicles:

  • 2019-2020 CX-5 SKYACTIV-G 2.5T

  • 2016-2020 CX-9 SKYACTIV-G 2.5T

  • 2018-2020 Mazda6 SKYACTIV-G 2.5T

Beginning in 2021 (if not before), Mazda identified an issue causing coolant leaks at the cylinder head of the impacted engines around the exhaust manifold. This concern may manifest in a variety of symptoms, including:

  • loss of coolant and/or coolant leaks

  • smell of coolant

  • activation of a low coolant warning message

  • engine overheating

  • activation of the check engine light

In response, Mazda issued an internal technical service bulletin (TSB 01-013/21) alerting its dealer technicians to replace the exhaust manifold gasket and engine cylinder heads. The bulletin advised the technician to reach out to Mazda for a partial engine replacement only if enough coolant had leaked into the engine to cause the engine oil to turn a milky light brown color.

The problem: once any coolant is mixed into the engine oil, the viscosity of the engine oil (and thus the ability of the oil to properly lubricate and protect the internal engine components) is reduced. In other words, once any coolant gets into the engine, the damage is (very likely) already done.

This bulletin has been updated a number of times by Mazda, yet, it has not provided any instructions to the technicians to either replace the entire engine (if any coolant has become mixed in the engine oil) or to even perform a full engine flush (to try and mitigate any potential damage).

Given this situation, it is likely that customers who have experienced these issues and had only the exhaust manifold gasket and engine cylinder heads replaced may experience a complete engine failure later on (and once the warranty has expired).

If you are an owner or lessee of one of the affected vehicles, and have taken it to Mazda's dealer several times with similar concerns, give us a call to see whether your car may be a lemon (and entitle you to a refund of the money you paid for the car).
